Consider a triangle ABC,

where AB=AC=b

and

BC=a

To find the area we need a perpendicualr.

So, drop the   perpendicular AD from A to BC.

We  know that in an isoceles triangle perpendicular on the unequal side bisects that side.

So BD=DC=a/2

In right triangle ABD,

AD=

AD=

So, are triangle ABC

=(1/2) base* altitude

=

Hence proved.
