Let 1/x+y = P and 1/x-y = Q
So, the given equations become:
8(a+b)P + 7(b-a)Q = 1
3(a+b)P - 2(a-b)Q = 1
Multiply the first equation by 3 and the second equation by 8, and subtracting, we get,
Q = 1/a-b
Put this value of Q in any one of the above two equations to get the value of P.
Use the values of P and Q in 1/x+y = P and 1/x-y = Q
Two equations in x and y will be obtained.
Solve them to get the values of x and y.
