1. With a diverse population of more than 1.2 billion, India is popular for its passionate outlook towards several things including sports. 
2. Popular culture will tell you that Cricket is the only sport that puts India on a global level. 
3. India hardly has any presence in global sports and athletic competitions beyond cricket. 
4. Time and again, sportspersons are seen struggling at global level events like the Olympic Games. 
5. Lack of infrastructure, poor funding, corruption, etc are the major reasons why India fails to perform. 
6. But the fact is that India can compete beyond Cricket at a global level and this was excellently shown by team India at Rio recently. 
7. India won a silver in badminton singles and a bronze in Women’s wrestling at beyond cricket. 
8. Dipa Karmakar’s feat with the Produnova at the Women’s Vault event finals showed that Indians have the thirst for showing their balancing skills too. Although she didn’t win a medal, she finished the most difficult and dreaded vault cleanly and also was ranked fourth at the finals. 
9. India needs to have a serious and a committed attitude towards global competition. Sports other than cricket should openly receive funding and mentoring. Authorities should invest time and hone the skills of sportspersons. Privileges and facilities should be provided to those who want to excel in sports but cannot do so because of personal and financial limitations.
