Weightlessness is the phenomenon experienced during free fall. Consider a man along with weight measurement machine in an elevator, he measures his weight when the elevator is at rest.

But now if the elevator is in free fall, the weight machine doesn't give any reaction to the action of man onto the machine, since both are moving with the same acceleration, g.

Hence weight machine reads zero.
