please explain the meaning of terms "haploid " and "diploid"

Dear student,
Haploid refers to cells having a single chromosome set whereas diploid refers to cells containing the complete two sets of chromosomes. Example - sperms and eggs in humans contain only 23 chromosomes each whereas all other normal autosomal cells contain 46 chromosomes each.
