cos theta is a mathemetical ratio defined with respect to a right angled triangle.
Like in Heros formula for area of triangle, we define
similarly cos θ is defined as ratio of two sides of rt angle triangle.
These two sides being those which intersect to form angle θ.
In conventional notation longest side of rt angle triangle is called hypotenuse and the side attached to θ is called base of triangle.
Therefore
