Expert Answer
When Mendel carried out crosses between 2 pea plants, pure for a contrasting pair of characters (like tall and dwarf), he found that only one character (e.g. tall) appeared in the hybrid of F1 generation. This character was named dominant by Mendel, since it suppresses the other character (e.g. dwarf). The other character gets suppressed by the dominant character and is not expressed in F1 generation and hence is called recessive. Even in F2 generation, the number of plants expressing the dominant character is much more than those expressing the recessive character.
