when an object is floating on liquid, upthrust given by liquid is balanced by weight of the object

Since half of volume of hollow sphere is immersed, upthrust = (V/2) ρw g    ........................(1)

where V is full geometrical volume of sphere, ρw is density of water and g is acceleration due to gravity.

weight of the hollow sphere =  Vs ρs g   ................................(2)

where Vs is shell volume of sphere and ρs is density of material of hollow sphere.

By equating (1) and (2), we have, (V/2) ρw = Vs ρs or   ρs = (1/2) ( V / Vs ) ρw ........................(3)

Volume ration V/Vs = [ (4/3)π 83 ] / [ (4/3)π ( 83 - 63 ) ]  ≈ 1.73

Hence density of material of hollow sphere, ρs = (1/2)×1.73×1000 = 865 kg /m3
