Dear Student

Generally refractive index of a material cinstant for a given wavw length of light.

some materials like Iceland Spar refractive index of the material depends on the polarisation of light.

Ordinary light cab be splitted into perpendicularly polarised components.

So when ordinary light passes through Birifringence (double refraction )material, perpendicularly polarised components bend differently and they will get separated because of that we will see twoo images.

This is called double refraction.
