phenol does not give protonation reaction easily..Why???????

phenylmethyl ether reacts with HI to give phenol and methyl iodide and not iodobenzene and methyl alcohol... Why?????

  • The lone pair on oxygen of O-H in phenol is shared with benzene ring through resonance.
  • So the lone pair is not fully present on oxygen.
  • Hence phenols do not undergo protonation reactions.
