When electrons pass from one carrier to another carrier via complex I to IV, they are coupled to ATP synthetase, i.e. complex V for the production of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphates.

Synthesis of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphates in mitochondria with the help of ATP synthetase is called oxidative phosphorylation.
ATP synthetase consists of two major components—F0 and F1.
- F1 Component
- It is a head piece.
- It is a peripheral membrane protein complex.
- It contains the site of ATP synthesis.
- F0 Component
- It is an integral membrane protein complex.
- It lies in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
- It forms the channel through which protons cross the inner membrane.
- The passage of protons through the channel is coupled to the catalytic site of the F1 component for the production of ATP.
- For each ATP molecule produced, two H+ ions or protons pass from the intermitochondrial membrane space to the matrix.
