oxidation state

Expert Answer:

Cations or the positively-charged ions are formed when a metal loses electrons. The anions or the negatively-charged ion are formed when a nonmetal gains those electrons.

The electrical charge that an atom achieves is called its oxidation state. Thus, the number of charge on an atom is the oxidation state.
