Catalytic oxidation of ammonia:
In the presence of platinum at 800°C, ammonia reacts with oxygen to give nitric oxide and water vapour
 
Procedure: Pass dry ammonia gas and oxygen gas through inlets over heated platinum placed in the combustion tube, which in the heated state emits a reddish glow.
 
Reaction:
 
4 NH subscript 3 space plus space space straight O subscript 2 space rightwards arrow with Pt comma space 800 on top space 6 straight H subscript 2 straight O space plus space 4 NO upwards arrow space plus space heat
2 NO space plus space straight O subscript 2 space rightwards arrow with blank on top space 2 NO subscript 2
