Expert Answer
Sustainable use of natural resources implies that we use resources in a manner which meets the needs of the present generation as well as preserves the resources for future generations. It ensures that we do not overexploit our natural resources and do not pollute our environment.
At the individual level, the key criteria to remember before using any of the natural resources is-
- To use only what is required
- Minimise waste
- Trying to offset the use by replenishing the resource like by planting trees, collecting rainwater, harvesting, etc.
At an organisational or industrial level, where the consumption is greater annually, the focus has to be on-
- Increasing efficiency
- Using the least amount of non-renewable resources
- Limiting waste material and energy at production level
- Using alternative raw material or resources
- Offsetting the use of renewable resources
Few changes in lifestyle and habits which can contribute towards sustainable use of natural resources:
- Switch off electrical appliances when not required.
- Use of biogas as domestic fuel should be encouraged.
- Fuel-efficient engines of motor vehicles should be designed to reduce consumption of petrol and diesel.
- Use of less paper and plastic carry bags.
- Plastic jars can be reused for storing salt, foodgrains etc.
- Used and discarded plastic, glass, paper and metal are sent to the respective industries where they can be converted into other useful products such as lampshades, handbags etc.
- Rainwater which falls on roofs and terraces of buildings can be collected through pipes and stored in underground tanks or can be allowed to percolate into the soil and used to recharge the groundwater table.
