Expert Answer
Let us assume that the total no. of candidates appearing in the exam is 100.
Let us take U as the total no. of candidates in the exam
A be the no. of candidates failing in English
and B be the no. of candidates failing in Science.
Given, n ( A ) = 56% of 100 = 56
n ( B ) = 48% of 100 = 48
By set theory, we get
So, number of students passing in both the papers = n ( shaded portion )
= n ( U ) - n ( A U B )
= 100 - 86 = 14
Hence, required percentage = 14%
