number of possible oxidation states increases towards the right of the periodic table.why?

The oxidation state of an element is related to the number of electrons that an atom loses, gains, or share to join with another atom in compounds. Since the number of valence electrons increases towards the right of the periodic table, therefore the number of possible oxidation states also increases.
