In prokaryotes, the nuclear region of the cell is poorly defined due to the absence of a nuclear membrane. Such an undefined nuclear region containing only nucleic acids is called nucleoid. Nucleoids are not present in plant or animal cells, since they are eukaryotic cells and contain well defined nucleus.
