non metals only gains electrons but hydrogen is a non metal though it gains and donates electrons

Expert Answer:

Hydrogen has only one electron in its outermost shell. It can both gain and lose electron to form stable compounds. When it is forming a bond with more electropositive elements, it gains electron and when with more electronegative elements, it loses electron. Due to this behaviour, its position in periodic table is anomalous.
