If there are no resistors in a circuit; then according to Ohm's law (I=V/R) I=
i.e. huge current will flow through the circuit, which will exceed the device rating and will damage the device.
All our appliances are connected in parallel with each other and with the mains supply. This means they all get the full mains voltage and we can turn on our TV without having to turn on our microwave as well.
