x+2y=1 ... (i)
3x-y=17
i.e. y = 3x - 17... (ii)
Substituting y in (i), we have
x + 2(3x - 17) = 1
x + 6x - 34 = 1
7x = 35
x = 5 ... (iii)
Substituting x in (ii), we get
y = 3(5) - 17 = 15 - 17
y = -2
