Expert Answer:

Cellular respiration occurs in mitochondria. Here, molecular oxygen is used to oxidise the sugars and fats to CO2 and water. This oxidation releases energy which is stored in ATP molecules.  ATP is known as the energy currency of the cell. The body uses this energy stored in ATP for carrying out various chemical activities needed for life. Since mitochondria synthesize energy-rich ATP molecules, they are known as the power house of the cell.
