The retina is the light sensitive part inside the inner layer of the eye.It majorly contains two types of photoreceptor cells: rods and cones ,which receive light and transform it into image-forming signals which are transmitted through the optic nerve to the brain. The rods are for judging the intensity of the light ,the cones are sensitive to the colours.
