Expert Answer:

A formula unit in chemistry is the empirical formula of an ionic or covalent network solid compound used as an independent entity for stoichiometric calculations.

Ionic compounds like NaCl do not contain discrete molecules as their constituent units. In such compounds, positive and negative entities are arranged in a three dimensional structure. So we used formula mass instead of molecular mass.
