suppose x students appeared.

so num who failed is  x/4

and

 those who passed is 3x/4

suppose 8 more had appeared, then x+8 would have appeared.

6 less passed so, (3x/4)-6 would have passed.

so num who failed would be [x+8]-[(3x/4)-6]=(x+14)-3x/4

then ratio of passed to failed is 2:1

so,

[(3x/4)-6]:[(x+14)-3x/4]=2;1

solving we get,

x=136
