Let X be the age at death of Diophantus.
X/6 = childhood,
X/12 = youth,
X/7 = bachelor,
then 5 years after marriage, a son is born hence we have to add 5 years.
Now this child dies after four years, but at that time the age of his father is X/2.
X/6 + X/12 + X/7 + 5 + 4 = X/2
X/6 + X/12 + X/7 - X/2 = - 9
(2X + X - 6X)/12 + X/7 = -9
-X/4 + X/7 = -9
-3X/28 = -9
X = 9x28/3 = 84 years,
He died at the age of 84 years,
