Expert Answer:

Let X be the age at death of Diophantus.

X/6  = childhood,

X/12 = youth,

X/7 = bachelor,

then 5 years after marriage, a son is born hence we have to add 5 years.

Now this child dies after four years, but at that time the age of his father is X/2.

X/6 + X/12 + X/7 + 5 + 4 = X/2

X/6 + X/12 + X/7 - X/2 = - 9

(2X + X - 6X)/12 + X/7 = -9

-X/4 + X/7 = -9

-3X/28 = -9

X = 9x28/3 = 84 years,

He died at the age of 84 years,
