Expert Answer:

During the day, plants carry out both respiration and photosynthesis. So the carbon dioxide released by the plants during day (during respiration) is used in the process of photosynthesis. At night, plants do not carry out photosynthesis, since there is no sunlight present. Hence the carbon dioxide produced during respiration is released to the outside, since they do not require it for photosynthesis.
