This is due to the presence of epiglottis. The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that is located at the base of the tongue that keeps food from going into the trachea, or windpipe, during swallowing. It moves over the larynx and closes off the end of the windpipe during swallowing to prevent food from passing into it and causing choking.
