Iodine is required by the thyroid gland for the production of thyroxine hormone. This hormone regulates fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism in our body. If thyroxine is in deficient amounts, it will cause swelling up of the neck due to the enlargement of thyroid gland. This deficiency disease is known as goitre. Hence, to avoid this condition, it is eesential to consume iodised salt in our diet.
