is a virtual image always erect and a real image always inverted?

Expert Answer:

Yes. It is true.
A light ray incident on convex lens from one side of principal axis, converges and reaches other side of principal axis. Thus, an inverted image is formed which is also a real image.
When a light ray incidents on a concave lens, it diverges and hence image formed is virtual.
Similar phenomenon occurs in mirrors.
