Iron does not burn on heating but iron fillings burn vigorously when sprinkled in the flame of burner.Why?

When iron block is kept in the flame, the heat is conducted quickly to the area of the block which is not in the flame.
But the heat supplie to the iron filings does not have a way to get distributed as the entire filing is surrounded by the flame.
Thus, the iron filing can reach its ignition temeprature easily when kept in the flame but the iron block does not.
Hence, the iron block does not burn on heating but iron filing get burnt vigorously when sprinkled in the flame of burner.
