Expert Answer:

A group of atoms carrying a charge is known as a polyatomic ion. It is not that all atoms in a polyatomic ion carry same charge. .When two or more atoms join together with covalent bonds, and still have a net charge on the entire particle to compensate an imbalance in their electron configurations,  a polyatomic ion is formed.
