- The anode is the electrode where oxidation (loss of electrons) takes place. The anode attracts anions.
- The cathode is the electrode where reduction (gain of electrons) takes place. The cathode attracts cations.
The electrochemical reaction for Daniel cell is as follows:
Zn + Cu2+ ? Zn2+ + Cu
In the above reaction, zinc is getting oxidized while copper is getting reduced.
Hence the negative electrode or anode is zinc electrode.
And the positive electrode or cathode is copper.
In Daniel cell, the flow of electrons is from zinc electrode to copper electrode.
