D, E and F are the mid-points of AB. BC and CA respectively. 
The mid-points are joined together and a different triangle namely DEF is formed. 
DE is parallel to the side BC of the triangle. 
From the Basic Proportionality Theorem (or B.P.T.), AD / AB = AE / EC
