In a series combination and a parallel combination why does the current and voltage change respectively?

In a series combination, 2 or more resostors are kept so that the net resistance increases. That is why for a given voltage, the value of current changes. Similar is the case with parallel combination. In this if the resistance value changes and hence the voltage changes.
