In FCC unit cell,
X atoms are occupy FCC packing and Y atoms occupy octahedral voids.
If the all the atoms at one diagonal plane are missing, then4 corner and two face centered Y atoms are missing while 1 body centered and two edge centered X atoms are missing.
contribution of Y at corners = 1/8×4= 0.5
contribution of Y at faces = 1/2 ×4 = 2
Total Y atoms = 2.5
Now,
Contribution of X at the edges = 1/4×8=2
The formula will be X2.5Y2 or X5Y4.
