Imbibition and Osmosis

Expert Answer:

Osmosis is an active process carried out by living cells. Imbibition is a passive process carried out even by non-living or inert cells.

Imbibition is the absorption of fluid by a solid or colloid, as in a seed swelling in the act of water absorption prior to germination.

Osmosis is the passage of water from a region of high water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to a region of low water concentration.
