Why medulla oblangata works continuously, it never takes rest one mintue ?

The medulla oblongata controls the activities of the internal organs, heartbeat and breathing. If these activities stops for even a minute it will cause the severe damage to the brain or death of human being.
Therefore if one wants to be alive he needs a fulltime working medulla oblongata.
