If we want to hear a train approaching from far away, why is it more convenient to put the ear to the track?

Expert Answer:
It is not matter of convenience.
If we put our ear on the track, as the sound waves travel through solid reach faster so we hear the sound of approaching train through rails made of steel where as the sound travelling through air do not reach the ears by that time.
