SONAR is a technique,.... not the waves themsleves. It involves emitting of waves, getting them reflected and receiving them back and measuring the time interval between sending and receiving them back.

The SONAR can employ either infrasonics or/both ultrasonics. In either cases the waves are reflected by the obstacles and not absorbed.
