According to the second law of motion, we have
m1 = F/a1; and
m2 = F/a2.
Here,
a1 = 5 m s-2;
a2= 15 m s-2 and
F = 10 N.
Thus,
m1 = 10 N / 5 m s-2
= 2 kg
m2 = 10 N / 15 m s-2
= 0.67 kg
If the two masses were tied together then the total mass, 'm'; would be
m = m1 + m2
= 2 kg + 0.67 kg = 2.67 kg.
The total acceleration, 'a' produced in the combined mass by the 10 N force would be,
a = F / m
= 10 N / 2.67 kg
= 3.74 m s-2
