Most of the plant cells, whose major function is to provide mechanical support are dead cells. This is because dead cells can easily provide mechanical support and do not require constant maintenance.
The cell wall of the dead cells in plant tissues consist of a special materials such as lignin, suberin which helps them perform their functions.
