if pesticides kill insects and pests, don't they harm the crop plants too?

Yes, it may harm if the quantity is right. The quantity of pesticides sprayed is carefully spread so that it does not affect the plants and yes, these sprays can cause air pollution when used non-uniformly across the crops.
