If length and diameter of two wires of a given material are in the ratio 1:2 each. What is the ratio of their Young's Modulus?

Expert Answer:

Youngs modulus is given by the formula

Y = FL/A?, where F is force , L is length, ? is deformation and A is area given by ?r2

Now, L1/L2=1/2  and D1/L2=1/2 means r1/r2=1/2

So, Y1/Y2=(L1/L2)(r2/r1)2 = 4/2 =2

hence the ratio to their youngs modulus is 2:1

Thank you
