Give: a+1/a = 3
(i)
a2 + 1/a2 = a2 + 1/a2 + 2 - 2 = a2 + 1/a2 + 2 x a x 1/a - 2 = (a+1/a)2 - 2 = 32 - 2 = 9 - 2 = 7
(ii) a4 + 1/a4 = a4 + 1/a4 + 2 - 2 = a4 + 1/a4 + 2 x a2 x 1/a2 - 2 = (a2 + 1/a2)2 - 2 = 72 - 2 = 47
