there are four types of parabolas which are having standard equations.

facing upwards, downwards

opening to the left, opening to the right.

it depends totally on the equation of the parabola to identify it's one of the types given above.

parabola is also a set of points whose distance from a fixed line is equal to thier distance from a fixed point.

 the fixed point is called the focus.
