Expert Answer
Detergents are the potassium or sodium salts of fatty acids.
Sodium salts dissolve in water and lather is formed.
Sulphates, chlorides and bicarbonates of magnesium and calcium make water hard.
When soap or detergent is added to the hard water sodium ions are replaced by calcium or magnesium ions and gets precipitated.
Therefore the formation of lather is prohibited.
Hence,
Lather will form in test tube I which contain sodium chloride solution.
No lather will form in test tubes II, III and IV.
