The metal is sodium Na.
Rock salt is NaCl.
Na is kept in kerosene oil as it is highly reactive. It reacts with moist air violently forming its hydroxide. Can react with oxygen as well forming its oxide. To prevent these reactions it has to be kept away from air hence is stored in kerosene. It cannot be stored in water or alcohol for the similar reasons.
