Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes.So when an offspring is born it inherits half of its chromosomes form each parent.So how is 23 split into 2?

Dear student,
Humans have 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes. During gamete formation, meiosis occurs and each pair of homologous chromosomes separate such that each gamete has only one of each pair of the homologous chromosome. Hence the number the chromosomes gets reduced to half of 46 i.e. 23.
