Expert Answer:

Plasma membrane of cells can rupture due to various reasons. Small ruptures can be caused from entry or leaving of viruses or small microorganisms from the cell. Massive ruptures can be caused in various ways like soaking the cell in hypotonic solution and bursting with water, subjecting the cell to repetitive mechanical strains, subjecting the cell to extremes of temperature or repetitive heating and cooling. Also release of hydrolytic enzymes from ruptured lysosomes can cause plasma membrane disruption.
