How were the position of cobalt and nickel resolved in the modern periodic table?

In the modern periodic table, elements are arranged in accordance with their atomic number.
Atomic number of Co is 27 and for Ni it is 28.
Hence, cobalt is placed before nickel in the modern periodic table.
